Beyond the Realm was my senior thesis for my Visual Arts major. Below is my artist statement.
I have always been fascinated by how nature presents itself, especially the parts that are extraordinary, and at times can almost seem surreal, or an illusion. As I experiment with different mediums, I explore what makes me feel the most connected to myself and the world around me. My artistic process reflects the unpredictability of Mother Nature— my motivation and creativity come in waves that I lack control over, yet, the possibilities are endless.
I was inspired to create whimsical scenes by overlaying drawings on photographs, because I feel there is magic and excitement in both what could be, and fabricating something new from what already is. I am captivated by color, texture, and light— such as the vibrancy of a puffin’s bill, the way the sunlight illuminates water droplets on a mossy stream, or the organic intertwining of the hairs on a yucca plant. These works are an invitation and encouragement to look beyond the realms of nature as we know them and envision it with no limits.
